The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, leading him to enact a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, many his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
