Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such drugs must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
